Our Lady of the Fields Patroness of Glenmary Home Missioners

by John Feister, Glenmary Communications
(Cincinnati, Ohio)

Our Lady of the Fields is patron to Glenmary Home Missioners, founded by Father William Howard Bishop in 1939 to establish Catholic churches in U.S. counties where there is none, focusing on rural counties in Appalachia the Deep South. Often there are some Catholics in the areas, traveling far to attend Mass. After a parish is established, Glenmary turns it over to the care of the local diocese and moves on to start a new parish where there is need. In witnessing to the Gospel, Glenmary priests, brothers and lay associates often work in antipoverty programs and local ecumenical organizations. Glenmary's headquarters is in Cincinnati, Ohio.
